Sardar Patel and Nehru : Remembering the Legacies of India s Two Great Leaders

January 19, 2024

Discover the debate surrounding the Statue of Unity and its significance for India's history. Learn about the legacies of both Sardar Patel and Nehru and the importance of celebrating and remembering all our leaders for a unified and secular India.

The recent inauguration of the Statue of Unity, the world’s tallest statue, has sparked a debate about the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the man responsible for its construction. While some argue that the statue is a symbol of unity and pride for the country, others believe that it is a political move to overshadow the contributions of other leaders, particularly Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. During the inauguration ceremony, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Patel as the “iron man” who united hundreds of princely states to form the nation of India. He also mentioned Patel’s role in building the Somnath temple, a symbol of Hindu pride and heritage. This has led many to believe that the construction of the statue and its grand inauguration is a way for the current government to promote a Hindu nationalist agenda.

However, a lot of people contend that the statue honors a brilliant leader who has been eclipsed by other notable Indian historical figures. Patel, who was also known as the “patron saint of India’s civil servants,” played a crucial role in the country’s independence movement and was instrumental in creating a unified India. However, his contributions have often been overlooked due to the dominant presence of leaders like Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru.

The head of the ruling party, Amit Shah, said during the inauguration ceremony that Nehru, the nation's first prime minister, had eclipsed Patel's legacy. Shah claimed that Nehru’s secular policies have done more harm than good to the country, and as a result, his contributions are fading from public memory.  This statement has sparked a debate about the role of Nehru in India’s history. While many credit him for his vision and leadership in the early years of the country’s independence, others believe that his policies have led to the current state of affairs, including the rise of religious and political divides.

It is essential to remember that both Patel and Nehru have played significant roles in shaping India as we know it today. While Patel contributed to the country’s unity and its infrastructure, Nehru focused on building a secular and democratic nation. Both of their legacies are crucial and should be remembered and celebrated. The construction of the Statue of Unity is undoubtedly a monumental achievement, but it should not be used to promote a political or religious agenda. It is crucial to have a balanced and inclusive approach to remembering our leaders, rather than pitting one against the other.

In conclusion, the statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is a symbol of unity and pride for the country, but it should not be used to diminish the contributions of other leaders, particularly Nehru. As a nation, we should celebrate the legacies of all our leaders and strive towards building a secular and united India, just as Patel and Nehru envisioned.
