Radhakrishnan Chakyat is recognized for the important work he did as a civil servant and diplomat. Chakyat began his career in Kerala in 1981, after being born in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, on May 29th, 1954.

Chakyat started his path to becoming a civil servant at school. His first degree was a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Loyola College in Chennai and he then enrolled in St. Stephen's College, Delhi, for his Master's in philosophy. From a young age, his academic success became clear and prepared him for a successful role in the IAS.

The IAS welcomed Chakyat in 1977 and he became part of the Maharashtra cadre’s staff. He worked in different administrative positions, both in the centers and in the states. He worked to build stronger ties between these countries and India, promote trade and cultural exchange and increase contact among people.

Because of Chakyat’s knowledge in finance and trade matters, he was named India’s Deputy Permanent Agent to the WTO in Geneva. The WTO looked to him to protect India’s interests, negotiate trade deals and guide talks on major trade issues around the world.

In addition to his career as a diplomat, Chakyat has played a major role in education. He has worked as an advisor for both the World Bank and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). He fulfilled the role as Chairman of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication’s Board of Directors as well. Thanks to his great expertise and experiences, he has played a key role in guiding India’s youth.

Many Indian government awards have been given to Chakyat for his outstanding contribution to music. For his excellent work in public service, he has been bestowed with the Padma Bhushan by the Indian government. He also received the Prime Minister’s Award for outstanding work in administration.
